Machu Picchu Tickets 2026: Prices, Ticket Types and How to Buy

By the Goo Machu Picchu team · Checked against official sources (editorial policy) · Updated October 2026 · 14 min read

Machu Picchu tickets are timed entry passes sold by Peru's Ministry of Culture through the official site tuboleto.cultura.pe. From May 1, 2026, a foreign adult pays S/163 (about $45) to enter the Inca citadel, or S/211 with Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Every ticket fixes one date, one entry hour and one circuit.

This guide covers each part of that decision in the order travelers usually ask: the price, which circuit and route to choose, how the purchase works, how early the dates disappear, the rules at the gate and the extra costs a ticket does not include.

How Much Does a Machu Picchu Ticket Cost in 2026? Admission and Entry Fee

A Machu Picchu admission ticket costs a foreign adult S/163, roughly $45, for visits from May 1, 2026. The fee was S/152 until April 30 and rose by an S/11 conservation charge for the protected area. Routes that include Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain or the Great Cavern cost S/211, about $58.

The entry fee is set in Peruvian soles, so the dollar amount moves a little with the exchange rate. Your US card is charged in soles, and your bank converts it.

Peruvians, foreign residents of Peru and citizens of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador pay a lower promotional rate. A US passport holder pays the foreign rate even when living briefly in Peru.

Entrance Ticket Prices for Adults, Students and Children

Foreign adults pay the full entrance ticket price, while children aged 3 to 17 and university students with a valid card pay a reduced rate close to half. Peruvian press reported the reduced 2026 fee as S/82 after the conservation charge. Children under 3 enter without paying.

Student pricing needs an undergraduate card that shows a current date; graduate students are often refused. Carry the same card you used to book, because staff check it at the entrance.

Documents Needed for Student and Child Discounts

A student discount on Machu Picchu tickets needs a current undergraduate university card with a photo and a visible date, plus the passport used for booking. Children aged 3 to 17 qualify through the date of birth on their own passport. Staff check both documents at the entrance gate, not only online.

  • International ISIC cards are widely accepted when they show the university name and a valid date.
  • Graduate, master's and expired student cards are commonly refused.
  • A student who cannot show the card at the gate may be asked to pay the difference or be refused entry.
  • Bring a printed or digital copy of the card shown at booking, since staff compare the name with your passport.

Official Price vs Agency Price: Why Online Sellers Charge More

Machu Picchu ticket prices on agency and resale sites run from about $60 to $77 because the official government fee is bundled with a service charge, a booking deposit or a currency margin. The government price never changes between sellers. Only the extra charge on top of that fee varies.

Paying an agency can still make sense when the official site rejects a foreign card, when you want one company to match the ticket with a train time and guide, or when you book a full Machu Picchu day trip from Cusco where the ticket is already inside the price.

What Changed for Machu Picchu Tickets in 2026?

Machu Picchu tickets changed in three ways during 2026. An S/11 conservation fee raised the foreign adult price to S/163 from May 1. Daily capacity was fixed at 5,600 visitors in high season. Since September, the official site sells tickets directly, without the old pre-reservation step, and payment must finish within minutes.

  • Price: S/152 rose to S/163 for foreign adults, and mountain routes rose from S/200 to S/211.
  • Purchase: tickets are bought and paid in one session on tuboleto.cultura.pe, with a short payment window of about 15 minutes.
  • Capacity: 5,600 visitors per day in high season and 4,500 on other dates.
  • Guide: entry with an official licensed guide is required for visitors in 2026.

Older blog posts still quote S/152, $60 flat prices or a reservation code. Rules like these are why a ticket guide should show the date it was last checked, which this page does at the bottom.

Which Machu Picchu Entry Ticket Should You Choose?

Machu Picchu entry tickets are sold as 3 circuits split into 10 one-way routes, and each pass covers only its own route. Circuit 2 gives first-time visitors the classic postcard view plus the main temples. Circuit 1 is best for high panoramas, and Circuit 3 is the circuit that adds Huayna Picchu.

Each ticket type is a path, not a zone, so pick the pass by the view or temple you most want. For a full comparison of what every route shows, how long it takes and which suits you, see Machu Picchu circuits explained.

Machu Picchu Ticket Types by Route Code: 1A to 3D

Every Machu Picchu ticket names one of 10 route codes from 1A to 3D, and the price depends on whether the route includes a mountain climb. Routes 1C, 1D, 3C and 3D are sold mainly in high season. The route printed on your ticket is the only path you may walk.

What Do Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain Tickets Include?

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain tickets combine a steep summit hike with a short walk through part of the citadel, and both cost S/211 for a foreign adult. Daily spaces are only a few hundred, so these mountain tickets sell out weeks before the standard circuits in the dry season.

Huayna Picchu (Route 3A) is the sharp peak behind the classic photo, with narrow stone steps and exposed drops. Machu Picchu Mountain (Route 1A) is higher and longer but wider and less vertigo-inducing. Huchuy Picchu (Route 3D) is a short, easy viewpoint at the regular price.

Fitness, fear of heights and entry hours for each peak are explained in the full Huayna Picchu hike guide.

Inca Trail Hikers: Your Ticket Comes With the Permit

Inca Trail hikers do not buy a separate Machu Picchu ticket, because the Inca Trail permit already includes one entry to the citadel on the arrival day. A second visit, or Huayna Picchu, must be bought as an extra ticket. Permits are sold only through licensed operators, never to individual hikers.

Release dates and limits are covered in the Inca Trail permits guide.

How Many Machu Picchu Tickets Are Sold Each Day?

Peru's Ministry of Culture caps Machu Picchu at 5,600 visitors per day in high season, from June 19 to November 2 and on national holidays, and at 4,500 on other dates. Inca Trail hikers and in-person sales come out of these totals, so the number of tickets left online is smaller than the cap.

Mountain routes have their own much smaller limits inside the total, which is why Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain disappear first. The cap is spread across hourly entry slots, so a busy 7 am slot can be gone while 11 am still has space.

When Do Machu Picchu Tickets Sell Out? How Far in Advance to Book

Machu Picchu tickets sell out first from June to August and around Peru's late July holidays, when 2 to 4 months ahead is safe and mountain routes need 4 to 6 months. From November to March, 1 to 3 weeks is often enough. Circuit 2 and early morning slots disappear before the rest.

The Ministry of Culture announces each new season's sale date, usually several months before January. For month-by-month crowds and rain, read the best time to visit Machu Picchu.

What to Do When Your Date Is Sold Out

When the official calendar shows your date as sold out, change to another circuit or afternoon slot first, then check the next day. If nothing fits, licensed tour operators often still hold tickets reserved inside their tours. An overnight stay in Aguas Calientes also lets you try the in-person quota.

  1. Try other routes on the same day, starting with 2B, 1B and 3B.
  2. Move the visit by one day and shift your train ticket to match.
  3. Ask a licensed operator for a tour that already holds a ticket, such as our Machu Picchu packages with tickets.
  4. Keep checking the official calendar over the next few days, since shown availability can change.
  5. Stay a night in Aguas Calientes and queue for next-day tickets.

Booking Machu Picchu Tickets for 2027

Machu Picchu tickets for 2027 go on sale when the Ministry of Culture opens the new calendar, usually several months before the year starts. Travelers aiming for June to August 2027 should book within the first weeks of sale, especially for Huayna Picchu, because those dates fill earliest every year.

How to Buy Machu Picchu Tickets Online on the Official Website

Buying Machu Picchu tickets online takes about 10 minutes on tuboleto.cultura.pe, the official Ministry of Culture website. You choose the date, circuit, route and entry hour, enter passport details for each traveler and pay by Visa or Mastercard. The confirmation email holds the ticket, which arrives as a PDF.

  1. Open tuboleto.cultura.pe and select Llaqta de Machu Picchu.
  2. Check the calendar, which shows remaining spaces for each route and day.
  3. Choose the circuit and route you want, using the circuit table above.
  4. Pick an entry hour that fits your train arrival in Aguas Calientes.
  5. Enter each traveler's name, nationality and passport number exactly as printed.
  6. Select the visitor category: adult, student or child.
  7. Pay with a Visa or Mastercard credit card in Peruvian soles.
  8. Save the PDF ticket on your phone and keep a printed copy.

What You Need Before You Start

Before buying Machu Picchu tickets online, have each traveler's passport, a Visa or Mastercard credit card, your train arrival time and a first and second choice of route ready. The payment window is short, so collecting these details first prevents the session from expiring and losing the spaces you picked.

  • Passport number and nationality for every traveler
  • Student card or child's date of birth for reduced tickets
  • Train arrival time in Aguas Calientes
  • A backup route and hour in case the first choice fills

Paying With a US Credit Card

US credit cards work on the official site most of the time, but foreign cards are sometimes declined by the payment gateway for security reasons. Tell your bank about a charge from Peru before paying, use a Visa card if a Mastercard fails, and avoid refreshing the page after pressing pay.

  • Prices are shown and charged in Peruvian soles, with taxes already included.
  • American Express is not reliably accepted.
  • Some US banks add a foreign transaction fee of around 3 percent.
  • Payment can also be made in person at Banco de la Nación or the Cusco Ministry of Culture office.

Matching Your Entry Time With the Train

Choose a Machu Picchu entry time at least 90 minutes after your train reaches Aguas Calientes. The Consettur bus ride takes about 25 minutes, and the bus line can be long in the morning. Day trippers from Cusco usually arrive mid-morning, so an entry between 11 am and 1 pm fits best.

The return train should leave at least 2 hours after your visit ends. Timetables and train classes are in the Machu Picchu train guide.

How to Spot Fake Machu Picchu Ticket Websites

A fake Machu Picchu ticket website usually copies the government logo, calls itself the official site and charges well above S/163 without saying why. The real seller always uses the cultura.pe domain. Any site that asks for a bank transfer, or sells a ticket without your passport number, is not issuing a valid ticket.

  • Check the web address ends in cultura.pe before entering card details.
  • Expect a ticket that shows your passport number, route and entry hour.
  • Treat sites with no company name, address or tax number as a risk.
  • Use a known Cusco agency if you prefer help, and ask it to send the government ticket PDF.

Where Can You Buy Machu Picchu Tickets in Person?

You can buy Machu Picchu tickets in person at the Ministry of Culture office in Aguas Calientes and at its Cusco office on Calle Heladeros. The Aguas Calientes office sells a limited daily quota, mainly for the next day, and opens before dawn. Tickets are never sold at the citadel gate.

Travelers who stay overnight have more room to wait, so see the Aguas Calientes town guide for where to sleep near the office.

Buying at the Cusco Ministry of Culture Office

The Ministry of Culture office at Calle Heladeros 165 in central Cusco sells Machu Picchu tickets for any date that still has space. Bring every traveler's passport and pay by card or cash in soles. The Cusco office is useful when a foreign card fails online, but it cannot create spaces on sold-out dates.

Buying in Aguas Calientes for the Next Day

The ticket office in Aguas Calientes sells a separate daily quota, mostly for entry the next day. In high season travelers queue before dawn and the quota can finish within hours. Buying in Aguas Calientes works only for travelers with a spare night and flexible train tickets.

Machu Picchu Entrance Rules: Passport, Time Slot and Official Guide

At the Machu Picchu entrance, staff check your ticket against the original passport you booked with. You enter within your hourly slot, with a grace period of about 30 minutes in low season and 45 minutes in high season. In 2026, visitors must enter with an official licensed guide.

  • Carry your original passport; a photocopy or driver's license is refused.
  • A ticket on your phone is normally accepted, but a printout avoids dead battery problems.
  • Each ticket allows one entry; re-entry is limited to a single exit for the restrooms near the gate.
  • Large backpacks, tripods, drones, walking poles without rubber tips and single-use plastics are not allowed.
  • Groups with a guide are capped in size, and guides can be hired at the entrance if you arrive alone.

Refunds and Date Changes

Official Machu Picchu tickets are non-refundable, and the passport name cannot be swapped to another traveler. Date changes are limited and are not offered for every route or season, so read the conditions shown at checkout before paying. Agency tickets follow that agency's own cancellation terms, written in its booking confirmation.

Visiting With Kids, Seniors or Limited Mobility

Children need their own passport and a child ticket, and kids under 3 enter free. The citadel has hundreds of uneven stone steps and no wheelchair route through most circuits, so seniors and visitors with limited mobility do best on Route 2A or 1B with a slower private guide.

The site sits at 2,430 m (7,970 ft), lower than Cusco. Read Machu Picchu altitude and how to adjust before planning the visit for older travelers.

Full Cost of a Machu Picchu Visit: What the Ticket Does Not Cover

A Machu Picchu ticket covers entry to the citadel only. The train to Aguas Calientes, the Consettur bus up to the entrance, the mandatory guide, meals and any hotel are separate costs. For most US visitors, the ticket is the smallest part of a day trip budget.

Train classes and timetables are compared in the Machu Picchu train guide, and every route from Cusco is in how to get to Machu Picchu. Fares change during the year, so treat these figures as a planning range.

Buying the Consettur Bus Ticket

The Consettur bus ticket between Aguas Calientes and the Machu Picchu entrance is always sold separately from the entry ticket. Visitors show their passport and entry ticket when boarding. Current fares, where to buy and how early to queue are covered in the Machu Picchu shuttle bus guide, so budget it alongside your entry.

Cusco Tourist Ticket and Site Museum: Not Included

The Cusco Tourist Ticket, or Boleto Turístico, covers Sacred Valley ruins and Cusco museums but never Machu Picchu. The Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum near the bridge at Puente Ruinas also has its own small entry fee. Neither one replaces a Machu Picchu ticket.

Common Mistakes When Booking Machu Picchu Tickets

The most common Machu Picchu ticket mistakes are a passport number typed wrong, an entry hour that falls before the first train can arrive, and a circuit that misses the view the traveler wanted. Each mistake is hard to fix later, because official tickets are tied to one name, hour and route.

You can also compare all our Machu Picchu tours side by side, from one-day visits to multi-day treks.

  • Booking a 6 am entry while arriving on a morning train from Cusco.
  • Choosing Circuit 3 and expecting the classic postcard viewpoint.
  • Buying the ticket after the train, when the train is easier to change.
  • Using an old passport number after renewing a US passport.
  • Leaving Huayna Picchu until last, when it sells out first.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Machu Picchu ticket for Americans?

Americans pay the foreign adult rate: S/163, about $45, from May 1, 2026, or S/211, about $58, with Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. US students with a valid university card and children aged 3 to 17 pay roughly half. The price is the same online and at government offices.

Can you buy Machu Picchu tickets on the day?

Same-day tickets are rarely possible. The Aguas Calientes office mainly sells next-day tickets from a small daily quota, and the citadel gate sells nothing. In low season the official website sometimes shows spaces for the next morning, but nobody should plan a fixed trip around that.

Do I need to print my Machu Picchu ticket?

Printing is not strictly required, since staff usually scan the PDF ticket on a phone. A paper copy is still a good backup because signal is weak in Aguas Calientes and a phone battery can die on the train. The original passport is the document that cannot be missing.

Is the official Machu Picchu ticket website safe?

Yes. The official website, tuboleto.cultura.pe, belongs to Peru's Ministry of Culture and takes card payments through a secure bank gateway. Safety problems come from copycat sites with similar names. Before paying, confirm that the address ends in cultura.pe and that the price matches the official fee.

Can I enter Machu Picchu twice with one ticket?

No. Each Machu Picchu ticket is valid for one entry on one route. Visitors who want both the classic view and Huayna Picchu, or a morning and an afternoon visit, buy two tickets for two different routes or hours, often on the same day.

Which Machu Picchu ticket has the best view?

For the classic photo with Huayna Picchu behind the ruins, Route 2A and Route 1B have the best view. For the widest panorama over the whole valley, Machu Picchu Mountain on Route 1A wins. Circuit 3 routes stay low and do not reach the postcard angle.

Does the Machu Picchu ticket include the bus?

The ticket does not include the bus. The Consettur bus between Aguas Calientes and the entrance is a separate ticket, about $24 round trip for a foreign adult. Walking up instead takes around 1 to 1.5 hours on steep stone steps.

Can I visit Machu Picchu in the afternoon?

Yes. Entry slots run into the early afternoon, and the 1 pm to 2 pm hours are often quieter, warmer and clearer than early morning in the wet season. An afternoon ticket also works well for a day trip from Cusco, since the first trains arrive mid-morning.

Is it better to buy Machu Picchu tickets yourself or through an agency?

Buying yourself is cheapest when the official site accepts your card and your dates are open. An agency costs more but is useful when dates are sold out, when your card is declined, or when you want the ticket, train and guide matched in one booking.

When do Machu Picchu tickets for 2027 go on sale?

The Ministry of Culture announces the date each year, and the new season's tickets usually open several months before January. Following the official site and Peruvian news in the last months of the year is the surest way to catch the opening for June to August dates.
